Hangzhou Olympic Center Stadium

作者:霍高文 Updated:2023-05-08

Project Location: Hangzhou, Zhejiang

Roof Area: 74000m2

Roof System: Hoogovens®H65 Standing Seam Roof System

Project Profile:

Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center, with a total construction area of 210,000and designed to accommodate 80,000 people, boasts a total investment of 2.59 billion yuan and has been engineered for a service life of 100 years. Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center, as a multifunctional sports complex, is equipped with various facilities including a swimming pool, tennis center, baseball and softball center, hockey field, small ball center, indoor track and field center, and heavy sports center. It has the capacity to host world-class comprehensive sports games at both continental and national levels as well as international track and field and football competitions. Undoubtedly, it stands out as one of the largest sports centers in China.

The Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Stadium design is inspired by the silk texture and textile system of Hangzhou, while its architectural structure derives from the dynamic flow of the Qiantang River. The stadium features elegant petal units resembling a blossoming lotus by the riverbank, with an intricately divided outer surface that serves as both an enclosure and load-bearing structure. This design achieves seamless integration of form and function.

The metal roof of the project consists of 28 lotus petals and corresponding small petals, with the largest petal weighing 839 tons (approximately equal to the take-off weight of the Long March 5 carrier rocket). It is truly remarkable that these seemingly delicate giant "petals" are actually robust roofing systems made of sturdy metal materials. To achieve the desired "petal" effect, the "Lotus bowl" roof incorporates intricate spatial lines, resulting in a complex three-dimensional curved surface. The primary roofing system utilized is Hoogovens® H65 XT special-shaped roof system, which involves on-site processing of specially shaped H65 roof panels commonly referred to as waist drum panel system. Additionally, all wall petals are constructed using different H65 perforated panels. Notably, this project marks a significant milestone as it is globally recognized as the first implementation of H65 XT perforated panels.

In terms of technical solutions, the design team implemented an open metal panel construction system combined with thin steel rods. When designing the roof panels, not only did they carefully consider the rational layout of a "twisted" roof to ensure processability and ease of installation, but they also took into account the visual impact of the visible part of the wall. They transformed the original rigid steel skeleton into a more fluid form that harmonizes with the site's curves. Subsequently, these exquisite structural systems were interwoven in a deliberate order to fully manifest the architect's creativity.

Major Awards:

1. In February 2021, won the 2020-2021 China Construction Engineering Luban Award of China Construction Industry Association;

2. The total amount of steel used by "Lotus" is reduced by half than that of "Bird's Nest" -National Stadium (the total amount of steel used reaches 26,000 tons, 27,000 tons less than Beijing "Bird's Nest"). Won the highest honor of the national steel structure engineering -- China Steel Structure Gold Medal, the award is the highest honor of the national steel structure engineering, equivalent to the "Oscar" in the film industry.

3. The metal enclosure system of this project won the 2017 "Building Waterproof Industry Science and Technology Award - Engineering Technology Award (Jin Yu Award) Gold Award" due to its novel shape design, unique building structure, complex panel type production, high construction difficulty, and near-perfect project execution.
